Writing the Background of the Study
Writing the
background of the study is daunting to some senior high school researchers and
in some cases even those who are established researchers find it somewhat
difficult to accomplish. But don’t be discouraged because there are tips to
help you get along the track and start immediately.
First you must ask yourself,
WHAT DO I WANT MY READERS TO KNOW IN THIS PART OF THE RESEARH?
Answers may be different but,
in most cases, you will need to provide them with information about the topics
already been research upon related to your topic. This means that if you want
to study about how effective 4P’s is in a certain barangay, you should give the
readers valuable data on how the program runs in other places as evidenced by
other’s researches or even information from articles from trusted media
organizations. If you cannot find previous researchers conducted about 4p’s
then you are privileged to be the first to do it and this means that you need
to put in your background some information from similar programs such as
subsidy for students, financial assistance programs and other projects closely
related or similar to the one you are researching. This will help your reader
understands how other programs were implemented and carried out.
Second, read a lot of information
related to your topic use google scholar (scholar.google.com) or refseek.com. This
will provide you with wider perspective and will enable you as a researcher to
find out what gap will be filled by your study. For example, researches were
conducted about how bullying affects the academic performance of students, how
it affects the student’s behavior, how it affects their self confidence etc.
But during your researcher you find out that there was no study yet conducted
to know what causes one person to bully others, so this can be your basis of
conducting your researcher.
Third, sort out information.
Now that you have a lot to tell your readers it is important to know that the
background of the study is discussed from general to specific. So, sorting your
information based on the context of global and local will make your discussion
easier.
Fourth, write your background
of the study. This time you need to start writing your background of the study
using the information you have collected. Global concepts will be introduced
first to let your readers understand that your topic is not just happening in
your community but also in other parts of the world. Then, national level
information should be presented next to help readers visualize how the country is
doing in that topic.
